This online version of the classic card game Spades was made by me. My name is Einar Egilsson and over there on the left is my current Facebook profile picture! Spades is the fourth card game I've made, the other three are Hearts, Shithead and Crazy Eights. Spades is very similar to an Icelandic game I used to play, called 'Kani'. Hearts is a trick taking card game in which the object is to avoid winning tricks containing hearts; the queen of spades is even more to be avoided. The game is also known as Black Lady, Rickety Kate, The Dirty, Dark Lady, Slippery Anne, Chase the Lady, Crubs, Black Queen and Black Maria, Queen of Spades though any of these may refer to the similar but differently-scored game Black Lady.

Valery Gergiev’s idiomatic and authoritative conducting inspires a superb cast, headed by Plácido Domingo (Ghermann), breathtaking in his portrayal of a man unraveling toward suicide. Galina Gorchakova is Lisa, the woman he loves and destroys, Dmitri Hvorostovsky lends a superb voice and regal bearing to Prince Yeletsky; and Elisabeth Söderström is hair-raising as the old Countess. Olga Borodina is Paulina and Nikolai Putilin is Count Tomsky.
